Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville has officially declared his intention to run for governor of Alabama in the 2026 election. Tuberville, who is currently serving his first term in the U.S. Senate, confirmed that he will not seek reelection to the Senate and will instead focus on the gubernatorial race.

Tuberville made the announcement during a public appearance in Auburn, Alabama, a location significant to his political career as it was the site of his successful 2020 Senate campaign launch. He highlighted his priorities for the state, which include expanding manufacturing jobs, improving education, and tackling illegal immigration.

The upcoming election will be an open race due to the current governor, Kay Ivey, being term-limited. Tuberville’s entry into the race has already influenced the political landscape, with other potential Republican candidates stepping back from running.

There have been questions raised about Tuberville’s residency qualifications, but he maintains he meets the state’s requirements, citing property ownership and voter registration in Alabama dating back several years.

The senator’s campaign has attracted support from conservative political groups, signaling strong backing from key Republican factions. With Tuberville focusing on the governor’s seat, the Senate race in Alabama will likely become highly competitive in 2026.
